“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
Hong Kong November 29, 2011
I hit the road 8 years ago and never look back. What really amazes me in immigration, is quality of people. I am fortunate to meet high quality people along my journey. Last night I have been to HK and met extraordinary 2 chaps. One is a father of 2 that is moving to UK, London, and one that moved to Asia 35 years ago and never left. We had a few beers and sat at the beach talking about past and future, about goods and bars, about dos and don’ts.
What was really exciting was to hear stories of 2 very different people…
The Story of Steve
He was 8 years old when he first saw a show on TV with acrobats from Hunan province from China. He was so impressed by their performance that he decided that one day he will do these tricks with them. He learned how to unicycle, he hit the road. He went to Philippines, Indonesia, China. He learned 14 languages and dialects, he participated in an acrobatic tricks performed by Chinese acrobats. He laughed and cried. He took action and failed and won. 35 years later he is unicycling in clown’s outfit in one of theme parks in HK. He told stories of big investments in Philippines and other parts of Asia. His gains and his losses, but in his 50s you can see a sparkle in his eyes, childish sincere laugh and love for life.
The Story of Zo
Successful banker from London, UK living in HK for last 8 years. He is expecting an offer from the bank in UK. He is moving home. Why, I asked. The funny thing is, It will be cheaper for him to live in UK if something goes wrong, than in HK. He has 2 kids and they must go to school. It will cost around 30-35 000 USD per year just for school and housing isn’t cheap either. He wants to shelter his family and riding the storm. Fascinating person with deep knowledge of his craft, life and sad but very smiley eyes.
So these 2 people made my day, 1 is struggling against current and lives for himself, another one is riding the storm and tries to protect his family. 2 different stories, 2 different people, 2 theories of freedom, 2 happy men. Why did I tell you these 2 stories?
I wanted you to know that people out there make things happen. They laugh, cry, succeed, fail, wake up and keep moving forward.
Make a move. You will see something that you’ve never seen and hear something that you’ve never heard.
Egoistically yours, VP
